HEATING PROFILES

The phased array microwave beam transmitting power
from the Jet Stream Solar Power Satellite will be
designed to focus and steer the beam in specific patterns
on the atmosphere. The nature of a phased array is that it
can be electronically "steered" in real time. This means a
specific region of the jet stream could be heated and the
heating area could move with the jet stream to keep a
given volume of air at a constant heating rate.
Single 10000 Megawatt Solar Power Satellite

Various heating patterns can be applied to the
atmosphere by a single 10000 Megawatt Solar Power
Satellite. The heating times required to produce a
potential temperature gradient of 2 degrees kelvin per
kilometer and trigger turbulence in the flowstream of the
jet stream is about 4000 seconds.  The case of a Long
heating pattern parallel to the flow stream is shown
below. It is assumed the microwave phased array is
steered and tracks along with the volume element
depicted.
