ATMOSPHERIC HEATING WITH MICROWAVES
HEATING GEOMETRY

A microwave beam incident
on the earth will be absorbed as
it passes through the
atmosphere. The "absorption
coefficient" determines the rate
at which energy is lost from the
beam.
ABSORPTION
COEFFICIENT
The absorption coefficient in
oxygen and air as a function of
microwave frequency is shown
on the right. (Strandberg et al,
"The Microwave Absorption
Spectra of Oxygen (and air),
Technical Report No. 87,
November 19, 1948, Research
Laboratory of Electronics, MIT

Note that by changing the
frequency of the microwaves
the absorption coefficient can
be changed. This is useful for
achieving desired absorption
profiles in the Jet Stream.
