FUSION
SYSTEMS
CORPORATION
Background
Dr. Eastlund founded Fusion Systems Corporation in 1971 to
commercialize the capability of fusion torch like plasmas to
efficiently produce UV light. He was the Vice President for
Research. Four other individuals joined the effort of creating a
company. Dr. Marshall Greenblatt, the Vice President for
Marketing, presented the painting on the right of five
colleagues moving ahead to the Company to represent the
founding group. The name of the Company was derived from
the
"Fusion Torch."
Fusion UV Systems Inc.
Fusion Systems Corporation was sold in 1998 and is now called
Fusion UV Systems. It is located in Germantown,
Maryland. Dr. Eastlund was the principal inventor of the microwave UV lamp product developed by the Company.
The underlying microwave lamp patents are:

1.  M. G. Ury, B. J. Eastlund, R. Bradon, C. Wood, " Microwave Generated
Radiation Apparatus", U. S. Patent No. 4,042,850, 1977.

2.  B. J. Eastlund, D. M. Spero, M. G. Ury, "Method and Apparatus for Generating
 Electromagnetic Radiation", U. S. Patent No. 3, 911,318, 1975.

3.  B. J. Eastlund, D. M. Spero, M. G. Ury, "Generation of Ultraviolet Light With
 Microwave Plasmas", U. S. Patent No. 3, 872, 349, 1975.

The resultant commercial product is shown below. There are over 50,000 industrial installations worldwide that use
these lamps in production. Items as diverse as no wax flooring, beer cans, and optical fibers are produced with
these lamps.
UV Curing
The UV Curing process is illustrated below. Light from  UV lamp strikes
a monomer that is coated on an objected. The light converts the
monomer to a polymer in fractions of a second. This process
eliminates the need for solvents and has led to a host of innovative
coatings, including lubricious coatings that make catheter medical
procedures possible. Dr. Eastlund had a catheter medical operation
that used catheters made with Fusion UV Systems lamps. This is
"inventing ahead."
Wall Street Journal Article
The Wall Street Journal wrote a front page article entitled, "Five Physicists
Blunder to Success" in 1978. It was reproduced in a book. The article is
